Stuck in the car with Steve
After years of musing, thinking, dreaming, and exploring I’ve ended up with a head full of thoughts, questions, ideas, and philosophy that might be of interest to others. On a solo road-trip from North QLD to Victoria and back again, I took the opportunity to record an exploration of some of the things that bounce around in my head and underpin the work that I do. This is what you get when you’re stuck in a car with me. BYO snacks! The episodes were released in the order they were recorded, so although each episode explores a separate idea, and it is not essential to listen to them in order they DO follow a line of thought, as it were, from start to finish. There are callbacks and references to prior episodes throughout all of it and what I personally thought was a really satisfying conclusion to it all. Up to you how you listen to it! *** Important Disclaimer *** These thoughts are in no way fact-checked or reference cited. None of this should be taken as advice, inspiration, or truth. This podcast is purely for entertainment purposes only. The musings of a lonely person at the wheel after too many coffees and too many days on the road should NEVER be taken seriously.

16 min
This one is a little long, and rambly, and personal, but that seems to be well within the wheelhouse for a discussion about the idea of love and what it can mean to a person. There's no answers here, of course, only questions and a bit of personal reflection.

Storytelling has been essential to human history. The quest of a hero, the besting of a challenge, the happy ever after... Has our love for stories given us a false understanding of how life is supposed to work?

It's a complicated one, this one. The core idea here is one of polarizing complicated issues and believing they can be solved with simple solutions, but this short rant runs through a mess of complicated issues to look at it.

A tangled mix of thoughts about pollination, food production, and a very human unwillingness to accept change...

10. Climate change and the idea of permanence

Oct 18, 2024
19 min
As nervous as it makes me putting up a podcast about something that's been so vigorously denied by so many for so long, I'm not claiming to be a climate scientist here. This is more about the idea of change, especially as it relates to shifting environmental conditions...

9. Hope and Despair

Environmental issues often raise the same discussion as many others... centred around hope and despair and whether or not it's worth fighting at all.

After a thoughtful question about why the wealthy don't do much to alleviate social suffering, I had a couple of ideas bouncing around in my head to share...

Attrition within a given set of circumstances will eventually favour things that are designed for success within those conditions... what kind of contributing factors can impact on that?

I've spent a lifetime thinking about why people do what they do, and although I've got no authority to tell anybody else to believe it, I think I've got a few pretty solid ideas on what makes us tick. These podcasts were recording on a very long drive, and as I was alone in the car there was no way to double-check things or pull up references... so these are just thoughts. Unrequested, unsolicited, unfiltered thoughts. Please don't take them to heart.
